In an age when children and families are at risk of being affected by destructive forms of sexuality and the distortions of pornography, The Hope and Healing Institute is committed to a ministry of healing, protection and renewal. The Institute is a non-denominational ministry that integrates the inspiration of faith with insight from the behavioral sciences. We provide practical solutions to the problems associated with pornography, cybersex, sexual abuse, incest, infidelity, and sexual addiction.

Our staff represents several decades of experience. Dedicated to bring hope and healing to those who are hurting, our staff members are equipped to provide an extensive range of services including psychological assessment, crisis intervention, clinical counseling, forensic consultation, and life coaching. EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

Photo Staff Robert Robert J. Baird, M.Div., M.S.W., Ph.D. Executive Director

After serving in the parish ministry for fifteen years, Dr. Baird made the transition into the clinical field after earning a Master of Social Work and then a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. His doctoral dissertation opened the doors to the thoughts and emotions that put Christians at risk for sexual impropriety on the Internet, a temptation far stronger and secretive than many realize. With his unique combination of degrees and experience, Bob offers clinical and forensic services. Within the clinical area, Bob provides evaluative and counseling services to individuals, couples, and families. He is an expert in the evaluation and treatment of sexually compulsive behavior (especially cybersexual conduct) and he counsels victims of sexual abuse and sex offenders. He frequently testifies in court as an expert witness in cases of child abuse. He is available for consultation with attorneys and therapists. He serves as a consultant to churches and other ecclesiastical judicatories. Bob welcomes the opportunity to lead educational workshops and seminars. Bob is married and has one teenage son.

Photo Staff Ron Ronald Vanderbeck, Psy.D. Clinical Director

Dr. Vanderbeck began his clinical training at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Hospital. He then served as a therapist with the YWCA Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Center. Subsequently, he established the Sexual Self Control Treatment program at Human Resource Associates in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of child sexual abuse and physical abuse, sexual addiction and sexual offenders. Ron has been working in the field of sexual recovery since graduating from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. His undergraduate degree is from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Ron is married and has one son.

Photo Staff Brian Brian L. Fowler, L.C. Program Director

Since 1991, Brian has personal experience in the field of Sexual Addiction Recovery. He has had extensive training and experience with many life-enhancing, experiential programs, including National Sex Addicts Anonymous Conferences and Retreats, Survivors of Abuse Leadership Training Seminar, and DeColores. Brian has been a successful business owner operating his own graphic design company since 1992. Brian comes highly recommended as a Life Coach and is the founder and facilitator of the unique transformational workshop, The Uncovering. He is married, has three sons and is a Certified USA Table Tennis Coach.

Photo Staff Julia Julia Cunningham, Psy.D. Director of Forensic Services

Dr. Cunningham obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a major in Forensic Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. Since 2004 she has worked for both state and county government conducting forensic evaluations, conducting therapy on a forensic population, and running groups focused on forensic issues. Dr. Cunningham has also conducted many sex offender evaluations that specifically address the issue of risk for future recidivism. While working for county government in the Chicagoland area, she also became an approved sex offender evaluation provider for Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan’s, Sex Offender Management Board. Dr. Cunningham recently moved to Grand Rapids, MI, from Chicago with her husband and two children.

Photo Staff Amy Amy L. Jarchow, Ph.D. Director of Women's Services

Dr. Jarchow began her clinical training at Idaho State University and completed her internship at the Portland, Oregon VA hospital. Her dissertation focused on perceptions of violence against women. Since graduating from Idaho State University in 2004 with her doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Jarchow has been working in private practice. She spent 3 years practicing in Idaho before returning to her home state of Michigan in 2007. Dr. Jarchow specializes in evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. She provides therapy services to individuals, couples, and families. Her undergraduate work was completed at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Dr. Jarchow is married and enjoys exploring the outdoors and spending time with family.

Photo Staff Matthew Matthew M. Ready, LMSW Adolescent Treatment Director

Mr. Ready spent his first 15 years of professional practice providing individual and family therapy in Grand Rapids for children throughout Michigan placed in the delinquent and neglect child welfare system. Issues addressed within this arena included physical and sexual abuse, incest, sexual offense, substance and sexual addiction, attachment, and behavioral disorders. Mr. Ready currently provides clinical services for youth within the school setting as a certified school social worker and provides outpatient counseling services in the Muskegon area. Matt has an undergraduate degree from Hope College in Psychology and English, and Masters Degree from Grand Valley State University in Social Work. He is married and has three children.

Photo Staff Don Don Van Ostenberg, Ph.D. Director of Industrial/Corporate Services

Don Van Ostenberg has over 35 years of experience in the field of corporate and industrial psychology. His clients range from small family owned businesses to multi-billion dollar corporations. Don has consulted with college and professional sports teams, non-profits, and religious institutions on vocational and career issues, personnel selection, general management and leadership development. He created programs for select groups of clients and has been an adjunct professor at several local colleges.
